Professional Studies - Working with Actors

AKA Heath Ledger, the blog post.

Mike did a session today on how to work with actors, since quite a few of us in the class want to be directors.

We then had a quick screening of Adam's (graduate) film Ripper, to see what we could pick up about sound and SFX and what we liked and would change (there was one very quiet actor that kinda took us out of the multiplex experience) but I really enjoyed the film. I love the Joker reference at the end.

A handy source called the 'acting dictionary' for all acting terms. http://www.actingcareerstartup.com/acting-dictionary.html

We then looked at a few sources about directing an actor. One top tip is give the actor objectives. Why are they doing something? What is their motivation? We also looked briefly at the 'spine' of a story or a character in light of Back to the Future. The spine of the story is that if you believe in yourself, you can do anything. The spine of the Doc is to prove that he is a great inventor. The objective can be just for one scene.

I also learnt that two people in the class have never seen Back to the Future.

We then looked at how you could direct a scene in different ways. We looked at A Knight's Tale where William comes home. Mike and Jamie J were reading the parts, first angrily, then lovingly. There was a clear difference. Here is the original scene:

We also learnt a few stories about Mike's stage career (one will stick with us for a long time). Fun times.
