Nick Lockey came in to talk to us today with two lectures: one about work experience and one about multi-platform ideas/digital which is useful for my Digital Production module. There was also a short Q and A and case study talk after the main lectures for those sticking around. Nick works for Maverick Digital as a multi-platform producer, based in Birmingham.
Work Experience Etiquette (11:00)
Tips for work experience and how to get off on the right foot;
- Treat it like a real job
- Tea run is important. Endears you to the team. Kitchen is the most useful room in the building- you meet people you wouldn't normally meet. Strike up a conversation.

- Receptionist also important. Gateway into other jobs and meet everyone.
- Get the chip of your shoulder. Start at the bottom and make way up.

- If in doubt, ask
- Be cheeky
- Talk to strangers
Multi-platform Ideas (13:30)
When developing digital content you need to think about these things;
- What kind of story do you want to tell? Live or pre-recorded?
- Who is it for?
- What is it for? To entertain, to inform?
- Most stories follow the archetype "hero in a broken world-meets mentor-series of challenges-final boss-leads to tragedy or comedy"

- Why will people use it?
- Where will you tell the story? Where on social media?
- Brand has to be identifiable like a Cola bottle. Still know it's a cola bottle when it's smashed.
- How will the audience experience it? Episodes, film...
- Is your idea clear enough? Elevator pitch (a famous screenwriter is in an elevator. Be able to sum it up before they get off on the 30th floor)

- On screen and off screen talent?
- How will you fund it?
- Definition of success/how to measure if it is successful?
- How will people discover it? Marketing.
- What could go wrong?

- Skype consultations on air. Loads could go wrong.
- My Video Doctor. "my links" on videos to view later. Like a shopping basket.
- Charlotte's Story. Thought it was something little, ended up saving her life.
More Case Studies (15:30)

- Data can tell emotional stories. Told us about an old man taking part in a study for most dangerous parts of a city, that heart rate peaked in the park as that's where he met his wife. (relationship goals)
- Location also important. Inside Abbey Road (Google).
- Masquerade app (faceswap)
- Refugee Republic (won awards)
- The Supergamers (BBC 2016). Millionaire Gamers video with Dan Howell- produced differently to YouTube videos.
